I heed some help on understanding against the spread. I know what a spread is, but the word against has got me confused. It might help if someone could put help some examples of what is and what is not against the spread. I have looked it up in google but still can’t comprehend the meaning. Please take it easy on me with not too much fancy language. Thanks

First of all welcome to the RX. As to your question, there are many different types of bets. When a player is wagering ATS (Against The Spread), he/she is either giving the spread points or getting the spread points, i.e. Pittsburgh -3, the player is either giving 3 points or getting 3 points. If playing Pittsburgh, the player is giving 3 points. If playing the opponent, the player is getting 3 points. The term playing Against The Spread (ATS) is as simple as that.

An example of not playing against the spread would be playing on the moneyline. Below is a link from this forum with a glossary of terms for you use. Feel free to ask any questions you have.

So, If I understand it right if he or she bets on the spread it is the same as ATS.

In viewing reports or matchups. I see #’s like 9-7-1 in an ATS column. Can you explain what that means?

Yes! ATS means Against The Spread! In viewing match-ups, if you see numbers like 9-7-1 ATS, it means the team in question has won 9 games ATS, lost 7 games ATS and pushed (i.e. tied) 1 game ATS. Wins first, losses second, ties third.
